Introduction
Strategic planning embraces several constructs such as ideas that are formed in the minds of people. If we are explicate the term, what comes into our minds are associated terms like " strategy", "planning", "quality" and the "future".
The term strategy refers to a plan of action designed to achieve a long-term or overall aim. The term also refers to directing and planning operations. Historically, in the early 19th century it derives from the Greek "strategos" which means literally, "general of the army" or "generalship". Each of the Greek tribes would elect strategos to head its regimen. The strategos gave advice about managing battles to win wars. Thus, it had its beginnings related to directing and planning military operations.
Planning (also called forethought) is the process of thinking about and organizing activities required to achieve a desired goal. It involves the creation and maintenance of a plan that require conceptual skills. As such, planning is a fundamental property of intelligent behavior. This program leads us to a process we call strategic planning. Strategic planning is a tool for organizing the present on the basis of the projection of the desired future. A strategic plan is a roadmap to lead an institution from where it is now to where it would like to be in the next five years. In strategic planning, directional guidelines are given by the institution’s stakeholders. These guidelines aid appraising the changing market conditions and spot opportunities or dangers. They examine the organization’s strengths and weaknesses, mission and organizational values. Then, they try to match the corporate opportunities with the organization’s strength and priority commitments.
